ABOUT SOTOGRANDE
Sotogrande is located fifteen miles east of Gibraltar on the south coast of Spain in the province of Cádiz. It is considered one of the most exclusive private resorts in Europe and is famous for its residential area, golf courses, polo fields and marina. With international airports at Gibraltar and Málaga, Sotogrande is within easy reach from any destination.
The Sotogrande story goes back to 1962 when Joseph McMicking and his wife Mercedes Zobel de Ayala y Roxas discovered the San Roque coastline. The couple bought five neighbouring farms with the intention of building a luxury, residential development. With the McMickings vision, Sotogrande went on to become one of the most exclusive resorts in Europe, with the most expensive properties and a jet-set reputation.In 1964, McMicking hired Robert Trent Jones to design the first golf course in Sotogrande. At the time Trent Jones was considered the world’s top golf course designer. The Real Club de Golf Sotogrande was the first course in an area that boasts five courses including the world-class Valderrama, which hosts the Volvo Masters and the Ryder Cup.
Introducing polo in 1965 added to Sotogrande’s allure. Today, there are an ever-increasing number of polo fields owned by the Santa Maria Polo Club, which hosts prestigious Gold, Silver and Bronze Cup tournaments that bring in some 45,000 spectators every year. Sotogrande’s first hotel, The Tenis Hotel Sotogrande, also appeared in 1965 and was designed by the prominent Madrid architect Jose Antonio Corrales Gutierrez. Other hotels of note are the Hotel Sotogrande, Hotel Club Maritimo Sotogrande, and Hotel Almenara.

Where is Sotogrande?
Sotogrande is located on the most southern point of the Spanish Costa del Sol, in the province of Cádiz. Sotogrande is directly connected with the Costa del Sol N340/A7 coast road and the motorway toll road AP7. Marbella and Puerto Banús are a 30 minute drive away and the International Airport of Gibraltar is only a 20 minute drive and Malaga a 50 minutes drive away.
